Karenni Deeku Festival held in Chiang Mai, Thailand

A celebration of Myanmar’s ethnic Karenni culture, unity, and heritage with traditional food, music, and dance, called the Karenni Deeku Festival, was held at Suthep Municipal Stadium in Chiang Mai, Thailand on Sept. 28.

“I came here to show solidarity with our brothers and sisters who organized this event,” said Maui Pho Thaike, the deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Karenni Nationalities Defence Force (KNDF), an armed resistance group which formed to oppose the 2021 military coup.

The Karenni Deeku Festival raised 22,532 Thai Baht ($721 USD), according to organizers, who told DVB that the funds would be donated to civilians displaced from their homes in Karenni State due to the conflict since the 2021 coup and now live at Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps.
